What are HCAIs?
Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs) are infections acquired in hospitals or due to healthcare interventions. They are caused by a wide variety of micro-organisms including bacteria that normally live harmlessly in or on our bodies. These infections are often difficult and costly to treat and they can complicate illnesses, cause distress to patients and their family, and in some cases may even lead to death.
Preventing Healthcare-Associated Infections
Unfortunately, not all HCAIs can be prevented however with good practice and careful hygiene it has been estimated that around 15% to 30% could be avoided.
Meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial infection that is resistant to commonly used antibiotics and is present in around 3% of the population. MRSA is no more infectious than other strains of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), but can be more difficult to treat and therefore infections may become more severe.
Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a bacterium that lives in the gut of about 3% of healthy adults in England and 66% of children. It is kept at bay by normal gut bacteria however if those bacteria are killed by antibiotics, C. difficile can take over.
Harnessing Kirton’s experience and knowledge in the provision of seating combined with a real enthusiasm to make difference led to the involvement in the Design Bugs Out programme.
The principle aim of reducing, preventing and combating Healthcare Associated Infections with good clinical practice alongside innovative technologies, novel equipment and new products appealed to the Kirton business and development ethos.
Now these innovative products work in conjunction with good infection prevention practice to reduce Healthcare Associated Infections such as C. difficile whilst increasing comfort and improving patient dignity.
